How To Make the Most of Your Time at Disney Parks

Added: Jun 02, 2023
Category: Things to Do

Our family recently visited the Disney parks, which are back in full swing again! With Fastpasses gone and Lightening Lanes and virtual queues now in place, we had some things to learn and thought we should share some tips and tricks with our valued guests

What is a Lightning Lane?
1. The Lightning Lane is a separate line, which replaced the Fastpass line at each attraction.

2. You must have a Lightning Lane reservation to use this line and the wait will be much shorter than the regular “standby” line.

3. You can use the Lightning Lanes (with reservation) when you purchase Disney Genie+ in your Disney app (around $20 per day per person plus tax, but we had one day offered at only $16 per person)

Tips
* You don't need to use your lightning lane for your first ride if you’re there within the 1st hour of rides opening. A majority of the rides don't have a line yet, try to get on one of the more popular rides first and make your selection for your first lightening ride while in line.

* When you select a specific time in Genie+, you cannot use the Genie+ on any other rides. You will need to plan how you can efficiently use it by selecting the next closest ride time for the rides you want to enjoy.

* The moment you check in on a lightning lane, you can immediately use it on a different ride. The only time you are not allowed to use it is if you have a pending ride with lightning lane

* Even the reservation times using Genie+ fill up as the day goes on, so get there early and hit the most popular rides! By early afternoon, it was 3-4 hours before we could "schedule" to use our next Lightening Lane, so you either wait in the regular line or find something else to do until later in the day.

What is an Individual Lightning Lane?
The Lightning Lane that includes faster lanes for $20 per day, per person when you purchase the Genie+ does not apply to all rides. There are some rides where you have to pay "extra" to get on the Individual Lightning Lane. You can still ride these rides in the standby lane, but you can’t choose the Lightening Lane without this upgrade.

These are the most popular and in-demand rides at each park that are not included in the Genie+ service. The cost of individual Lightning Lane passes varies depending on the ride and the day, but it ranges from $7 to $15 per person per attraction

Single Rider Lane
If you aren’t already familiar, the “Single Rider Line” is a wonderful option for riding faster!! These are rides that have an odd number of seats in a row, which often leaves a seat vacant on the end, and because they want all seats filled, they have a “Single Rider Line”. You will end up in the same car with your ride partners most of the time, just not next to them, but in front and back of each other. Here are the rides to take advantage of this:

  • Rock 'n' Roller Coaster (Hollywood Studios)
  • Millennium Falcon Smugglers Run (Hollywood Studios)
  • Test Track (Epcot)
  • Expedition Everest (Animal Kingdom)

General tips to get on rides faster
* Get to the Parks Early (Sorry, It’s True)
* Take Your Vacation During Low Times of Year. Less people = less wait times. Here are the overall less-crowded times of the year at Disney World: January, February, after Easter until Memorial Day, September, October, and after Thanksgiving until mid-December.
* Pack your lunch and eat while in line for one of the most popular lines while everyone else has lunch reservations.
* Use a crowd control calendar - this shows recommended parks to visit and parks to avoid for each day of the year. This is available for free online https://www.undercovertourist.com/orlando/crowd-calendar/
